Chapter Twenty-One
Skyler
I wondered if Jonnie would find another ride to school on Monday morning, but she was right there with Amberlyn, her best friend and next-door neighbor. They climbed into my car, Amberlyn going on about some foot massage theyâd had the day before.
âI wish weâd had them done on Saturday morning,â she said as I was backing my car out of her driveway. âBecause then we could have worn open-toed shoes to show off our nail polish. The color Jonnie picked out for hers would have perfectly matched her dress.â
âYou painted your toenails?â I caught Jonnieâs reflection in the rearview mirror. Iâm pretty sure I was asking Jonnie, but Amberlyn assumed I was asking her.
âWell, the nail tech actually does the toenail painting,â Amberlyn said as she slipped off her little black flat and lifted her foot onto the glove compartment in a contorted position only a cheerleader could pull off. âSee, arenât they beautiful?â
âVery nice,â I said, barely glancing at them. I looked up into the rearview mirror. âYou gonna show me your toenails also?â
âNot unless you want me to use them to kick you in places that will affect your ability to have children someday.â
I cringed. âWe wouldnât want that, now would we?â
She raised her eyebrows at me, and I winked at her. She lowered her gaze, drifting her focus toward Amberlyn.
Yeah, yeah, I know. I pulled my attention back to the road. Iâd risked enough trouble already. How the heck was I supposed to break Amberlynâs heart? How badly was I breaking Jonnieâs every day that I waited?
We pulled into the school parking lot and into my regular spot next to Logan, who had a new passenger. The blonde cheerleader from Saturday night was perched shotgun beside him. Amberlyn squealed and rushed from my car the minute I had the gear in park. I hadnât even turned off the engine.
I leaned my arms and forehead against the steering wheel and spoke quietly. âIâm sorry.â
âProve it.â
âI will.â My head lifted, and I met her gaze in the rearview mirror, taking advantage of the first time weâd spoken since our blow-up Saturday night. âOne question, though. How?â
âHow what?â Jonnie asked.
âHow am I supposed to break up with her? Youâre her best friend. Give me some advice here.â
âYou want my advice on how to dump your girlfriend so that you can go out with me?â
âUmm⦠yes?â Was that the right answer? I raised my eyebrows.
âI donât know, either, Skyler.â Jonnie sighed. âI tried to tell her yesterday, but she thought I was talking about all the other guys on the team. Itâs like she has no clue.â
âMaybe we should just make out in front of her and see if she gets the picture.â
âTempting, but I donât think that would go over well.â Jonnie fought a smile by biting her lower lip.
Man, I wanted to kiss her. âOkay, weâve gotta get to class before I climb in that back seat with you and make out right now.â
Jonnie had her hand on the door faster than I could think and I exited the car as well.
